Build community

I work with small groups to bring people together for engaging activities that focus on human value because all belong to this world equally, and we all deserve justice and freedom. I prioritize clear communication, organization, understanding of roles, and helping people name and share the gifts they have, even as they develop new ones. Collaboration and communication are at the heart of what I do, whether in the classroom or greater community. I believe that policy, or community understandings, are central to success, and I push my communities to make these apparent and accessible to all members, or amend them, so that we can help everyone belong and bring their full selves to the group.

For specific courses in which I engage multiple communities or communities beyond my university position, please see my teaching page, especially teaching with community-engaged learning, where I detail my work with our local public elementary school.

I have long been a member of the Prairie Gate Literary Festival Committee at the University of Minnesota Morris. We work to bring authors and writing workshops to people in the region.

I am a member, and secretary, of the Briggs Library Associates, a group that supports the university library and activities for the community at large.

I invest time and resources into renewing my knowledge about and participation in best practices. I have trained as a SafeZone mentor, and I completed a two-year certificate in spiritual direction, the University of Minnesota Morris Faculty Leads program, the Equity Certificate at the University of Minnesota, and the Mental Health Advocate training there, too.

I host French students in my home for baking, scholarly activities, and cohort-building meals. I advise the French club regularly, and have also advised the Medieval and Ancient Studies Club and the Not-So-Secret Society.

I serve as the fiscal officer for the Société Guilhem IX, the North American Society for Occitan Studies and help keep the organization's finances tax compliant so that we can continue to thrive as a scholarly community.
