Hi. Welcome. I'm Lisa Shugert Bevevino (hear my name), a poet, scholar, and community-builder in West Central Minnesota. I teach French, Latin, and Medieval Studies at the University of Minnesota Morris. I write poems that show the nuances of small moments, emotions, and relationships. People often tell me there's a slight funny edge to their otherwise somber or ironic tones. I research about medieval people from the south of France and their religious and interpersonal experiences through literary representations. I build community to make scholarship, learning, and human connection fun and accessible so people can know and love each other in new ways.

I have my BA (Bachelor of Arts) in English, French, and Creative Writing from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. From the Ohio State University, I earned my MA (Master of Arts) and PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) in French, along with a Graduate Certificate in Medieval Studies. I earned my Writing Center Administration Certificate from St. Cloud State University. I am currently pursuing my MFA (Master of Fine Arts) in Creative Writing at the Mississippi University for Women so that I can write better poems, build a literary community, gain more skills in the teaching of writing, work on literary translation, and tell human stories of the Middle Ages and today in new ways.

I love human stories about how we see and know each other and all there is in this world because we all belong here equally and deserve justice and freedom. I create these stories, study them, and translate them. I learn languages so I can know and connect with more people and more stories. I speak English and French and read English, French, Latin, Old Occitan, Old French, Portuguese, Italian, and some Greek. I'm working on learning Hebrew.

I teach languages, analysis of literature, creation of literature, and medieval culture through reading books, class discussions, writing assignments, and community-engaged and experiential learning.

See my CV and Teaching Philosophy. Get in touch; I'd love to hear from you.
